“Waterloo” distinguished itself from the typical “dramatic ballad” pattern of the Eurovision Song Contest by its flavor and rhythm, as well as by its performance. ABBA offered the audience something they had never seen before at Eurovision: flamboyant outfits, a catchy uptempo song, and dancing. The Swedish band also broke old tradition by being the first to win Eurovision with a song in a language other than their native.

Loreen – Euphoria (2012)

“Euphoria” was Sweden’s entry for 2012 an won the 1st place of the contest gathering 372 points in total. It also broke the record for having received the most 12 points awarded by 18 countries under the current voting rules of the Eurovision Song Contest. 

Måns Zelmerlöw – Heroes (2015)

“Heroes” was another Swedish entry that won the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 with a total of 365 points. Zelmerlöw defeated a record number of twenty-six other participants in the final of that year, as it was the largest Eurovision Song Contest final ever with 27 competing countries.

Alexander Rybak – Fairytale (2009)

In 2009 Rybak won the competition with 387 points – a new ESC record (with the voting system of that time). It was Norway‘s third Eurovision win.

Duncan Laurence – Arcade (2019)

The performance of the song in Tel Aviv featured Laurence sitting behind an electric grand piano, surrounded by smoke, water, and lighting effects. Reactions to the simplistic performance were mixed. Laurence won the Eurovision Song Contest with 498 points. It was the first Eurovision victory for the Netherlands since 1975.

Mahmood – Soldi (2019)

As Italy is a member of the “Big Five“, “Soldi” automatically advanced to the final of the contest, held in Tel Aviv, Israel. The song finished in second place with 472 points, and even though it didn’t manage to climb to 1st place is one of the most popular Eurovision entries.

Lena – Satellite (2010)

“Satellite” gained a total of 246 points, giving Germany its first win since 1982, and the first victory as a unified country. It also became the first winning song from a “Big-Five” country since the United Kingdom’s in 1997.

Conchita Wurst – Rise Like a Phoenix (2014)

The song was the second victorious Austrian entry in the contest, their first being in 1966. Following her acceptance of the trophy, Conchita raised it and stated, “We are unity, and we are unstoppable.” The statement, she later acknowledged to reporters, was intended for politicians who oppose LGBT rights.

Johny Logan – Hold me now (1987)

“Hold Me Now” was written and performed by Johnny Logan, which became the winner of the Eurovision 1987 for Ireland. Logan had previously won in 1980 with “What’s Another Year?” and would go on to write the winner of the 1992 contest (“Why Me?” for Linda Martin). The song was also used in an Irish advertising campaign for McDonald’s in 2007.

Lordi – Hard Rock Hallelujah (2006)

The song, got 292 points in the end, winning the competition for Finland and surpassing the previous record (held by Ruslana with “Wild Dances”) for the highest points total in the contest’s history (until Alexander Rybak’s performance in 2009).
